Review: Testing Kiehl’s Ultra Facial Series and Midnight Recovery Concentrate

The search for the right products for your skin type can be long, exhausting and often seems never ending. I always had acne-prone skin and when I was younger I was willing to try eeeeverything that seemed promising in helping my skin clear up. I went online, read through various reviews for hours and then simply bought everything that a person with beautiful skin claimed would work. Unfortunately, that did not only cost me a lot of money, but also a lot of nerves. At some point I arrived to the conclusion that nothing will help me and that I simply had to live with my acne-prone skin. I changed my routine from time to time, never really having felt a huge difference. But now that I am basically in my mid-twenties, my skin has changed and I realized, so should my beauty routine. I need something more sophisticated. I heard a lot about Kiehl’s Ultra Facial products and decided to give it a try. Kiehl’s is one of America’s oldest skin care brands and positions itself like a pharmaceutical rather than a beauty brand – interesting! Thanks again to Feelunique for providing me with the opportunity to test their products!

While I usually go for anti-acne products, this time I didnt want to use products that tend to be aggressive and dry out my skin – especially not here in Copenhagen, as the cold weather and strong wind already dry out my skin anyway. Besides, I heard that chemically drying out your skin causes it to produce even more oils that clog the pores, leading to more acne and blackheads. So this time, I wanted to go with something more sensitive that focuses on regenerating the skin. Kiehl’s Ultra Facial Series was created to moisturize and nourish the skin while being very gentle. The midnight recovery concentrate supports the regeneration of skin cells. Before going into detail, let me share with you a brief conclusion  – I do like the products and I would recommend them, however, they also did not cause a revolutionary change to my skin after 2 months of using them.

Kiehl's Ultra Facial

Kiehl’s Ultra Facial Cleanser

This cleanser really leaves a good feeling after its usage. While I usually only apply cleanser in the evening to avoid over-drying my skin, this gentle formula was absolutely fine when used in the morning and evening. It does not cause any dryness or tight skin, but rather leaves it really soft. Furthermore, it is scent-free, which is really pleasant (I am not a big fan overly heavy scented facial products). The cleanser even did a quite good job in removing my make-up or even mascara. However, I still got the feeling that my skin would still have a few make-up leftovers… which brings me to the tonic…

Kiehl’s Ultra Facial Tonic

Usually I am used to applying a tonic after my cleanser in order to thoroughly remove even the last particles of dirt and make-up from my skin. The Kiehl’s Ultra Facial Tonic, however, serves another purpose. It focuses on hydrating the skin, not on cleansing. As this is perfect for starting into the day before applying make-up, I felt like I was missing a second step in my evening cleansing routine. If you prefer double-cleansing too, then you might want to look for another complementary product.

Kiehl’s Ultra Facial Cream

As mentioned before, the weather in Copenhagen is cold and windy, which can cause really annoying dryness to my skin. The Kiehl’s Facial Cream moisturises your skin for 24h and thus, is pretty intense! I would say its perfect for the cold days, but now that we are approaching warmer days, I feel like I would need to switch to a lighter facial cream. Furthermore, I am a little bit disappointed that it does not have an SPF factor.

Kiehl’s Midnight Recovery Concentrate

This overnight serum was actually the first Kiehl’s product that caught my attention. It claims to regenerate, restore and replenish the skin for smoother, healthier skin. As it’s an overnight product, it works with the skin’s natural nocturnal activity, which is when its most receptive to repairing itself from daily aggressors. Since I do suffer from acne scars, I was especially looking for something that helps its natural regeneration. Unfortunately, after a few days of using it, my skin started to get irritated (very small little pimples around my mouth area). Only after I stopped using it, my skin went back to normal and I had to conclude the serum was the cause for it. After some research, I realised that I might have over-used the product, since you should not use more than 2-3 drops otherwise it might cause irritation or pimples. So I might give it another try in the future, especially since many people are big fans of this product. However, I also read that the Kiehl’s Dark Spot Corrective Serum might be a better option for my particular acne-scars case.

So all in all, the Kiehl’s Ultra Facial Series has not been life-changing for me, but I really do think that they are good products, especially for the winter and for dry skin. However, I probably need a different series to better suit the needs of my acne-prone skin.
